An old man was sitting at his table one day
Writing a letter to pass time away

어느 날 노인 한 분이 책상에 앉아

소일거리로 편지를 쓰고 있는데

His little granddaughter climbed up on his knee
Saying won't you please write a letter for me

그의 어린 손녀 딸이 무릅에 올라앉아

말하길 저를 위해 편지 한 장 써주시지 않겠어요

Tell mommy I miss her since she went away

 오. 어떻하나 제가 말하는 이 편지는 나의 기도입니다

엄마에께 말 합니다 엄마가 멀리 떠난후 부터 엄마를 그리워하고 있어요

 
I coming to see her real soon I hope
He choked back a big lump that rose in his throat
나는 엄마를 만나게될 날이 정말로 빨리 왔으면 좋겠어요

노인은 목구멍으로 솟아 올랐던 한 덩어리의 감정을 억눌렀습니다

He sealed it and wrote on that big envelope
To God up in heaven you'll get it I hope

그는 큰 봉투에 하늘에 계신 하나님께

당신이 이 편지를 받아 보시길 바라며 라고 쓴 후 봉인했습니다

 
He stamped it and handed it to her to mail
Her big eyes were shining her little face pale
그는 날인하고 편지를 부치라고 손녀에께 쥐어 주었습니다

소녀의 작은 얼굴은 창백했으나 그녀의 큰 눈은 빛났습니다

She was crossing the street to the box o'er the way
And when she stepped out never looked either way

소녀는 길 반대편에 있는 우체통을 향해 거리를 가로질러 갔습니다

그리고 소녀가 나간 후론 그녀를 다시는 볼수 없게 되었습니다

A big auto hit her and sped away fast
The little girls prayers had been answered at last
큰 차가 소녀를 치고 멀리 빠르게 달아났습니다
그 작은 소녀의 기도가 마침내 응답을 받았던 것입니다

 

The postman was passing and picked up the note
Addressed to the Master and these words he spoke

지나가던 우편배달부가 그 짧은 편지를 집어들게 됐는데

배달 주소지와 그 내용을 보고 말하길

 
Straight up into heaven this letter did go
She's happy up there with her mommy I know

정말로 이 편지는 천국으로 배달됐군요

소녀는 저 위에서 엄마와 함께 행복하다는 것을 난 알고 있습니다
