Rare bird는 1967년 결성되어 언더그라운드에서 활동한 영국의 4인조 그룹으로, 스티브 굴드(Steve Gould, 보컬 색소폰 베이스), 데이브 카피네트(Dave Kafinette, 키보드), 그래험 필드(Graham Field, 오르간), 마크 에쉬튼(Mark Ashton, 드럼)으로 결성 되었다.

리듬앤드 블루스에 락과 소울 등을 가미한 프로그레시브 락적인 사운드를 가진 그룹이다.

5~6년의 짧은 기간 밖에 활동하지 못했던 그룹 레어버드의 유일한 힛트곡이자 대표곡이 바로 sympathy이다.

가난하고 굶주린 사람들에 대한 연민이 느껴지는 곡이다..
