She put not on her robes of black,

And as she rode into Glasgow town, the city for to see,

The bailiff's wife and the provost's wife

그리고 글라스고우 길거리에서 시민들은 불쌍한 날 빤히 보면서

“아, 이것이 너의 결혼식이었으면 얼마나 좋을까”라며 슬퍼했어요

“아, 날 위해 울지 말아요”라고 난 울면서 말했어요

“날 위해 울지 마세요

나의 갓난아기를 죽이지 않았다면

“내가 갓난아이였을 때는 서민이었던 나의 어머니는

Then by and come the King himself,

Looked up with a pitiful eye,

"Come down, come down, Mary Hamilton,

Tonight you'll dine with me."

 

그때 왕이 오셔서

단두대를 보며 말했어요

“내려오너라. 메리 해밀턴

오늘 나와 함께 저녁을 먹자”

 

"Ah, hold your tongue, my sovereign liege,

You'd never have shamed me here."

 

“그런 말씀하지 마세요, 존경하는 전하

그러면 바보가 될 뿐입니다.

나를 구해줄 마음이 있었다면

자를 이렇게 조롱거리로 만들지 안으셨을 거니까요”

 

“Last night there were four Marys,

Tonight there'll be but three,

There was Mary Beaton, and Mary Seaton,

And Mary Carmichael, and me."
